So in this example, $process is a parameter?  Therefore, the idea in my 
case would be to have, for example:

<xsl:template match="db:citation[$citation-class='author-year']">
    ...
</xsl:template>

That simply says, "apply this template only if the citaton-class 
parameter is set to 'author-year'"?
