Yes use a variable with select. (almost as I showed, but with an extra
/* as shown by Dimitre.

if you use a select attribute then you get a node set, if you do not
then you generate a result tree fragment and a) have to use an extension
function to generate a node set and b) it's _much_ more expensive as all
the nodes have to be copied which is an expensive operation.
