oh and after changing select="l" to select="*" you presumably only want
to unwrap l elements. the details depend a bit on what hapens if you get
a pb in between two lines that you are merging, but assuming that can't
happen for now

             <xsl:choose>
          <xsl:when test="self::l">
                  <l n="{position()}">
                  <xsl:for-each select="current-group()">

         <xsl:otherwise>
           <xsl:copy-of select="current-group()"/>
         </xsl:otherwise>
