> (a change from 1.0 to 2.0) Not really a change, xslt1's document function can also open multiple documents at one go, just give it a node set and it takes the string value of each node in the set as a uri for a document to be loaded. xslt2's docuemnt(0 is the same, apart from the usual node set / sequence changes.
