I think you just want the single template: <xsl:template match="*"> <xsl:copy> <xsl:copy-of select="@*"/> <xsl:apply-templates> <xsl:sort select="name()"/> </xsl:apply-templates> </xsl:copy> </xsl:template> If you have mixed content (rather than all elements or all text) you'd have to be a bit more careful (the above would sort all text nodes together, along with commnts and other unnamed nodes).
