Subject: [stella] Joystick Port Baud rate... From: cybergoth@xxxxxxxx Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 15:02:31 +0100 (CET) |
Hi there! Here's a question for the hardware gurus: If one would try to use the Joystick port as a serial interface, what would the maximum baud rate be, to which the port could react with clear readings? In the archive the information is a bit blurry... It says all values from 300-1200 baud, then there's Jim Nitchall saying they had 3-5K running over C64/Apple/Atari Joystick ports and a very recent note from Chad Schell, quote: "The 2600 is capable of doing up to 38.4Kbaud with auto baud rate detection. Of course that's just receive." Now, here I'm not sure, _where_ the VCS received the data. Chad, could you please go into detail, What and how you did it? I'd be interested in the source for receiving this data, too. Especially the auto detection and how you went along without interrupts. 38.4K would leave you some 25 cycles/bit, right? Did you synchronize with timers or extreme precisely calculated loops?
