but you confirmed my suspicions, you were comparing something which more
or less works, with something that is planned and might be better, so
talk of relative speeds shouldn't really be the issue, until the two
systems are at a comparable state.

However I do look forward toseeing the back end, it might well be
faster.
pdftex is a _lot_ faster than tex dvi dvips postscript distiller pdf
so there are benefits in cutting out some of the steps.
you  just can't claim it _is_ faster until it is doing equivalent
things....
