Please make sure you read jade.htm which comes with jade.  It talks
about just this problem.

You don't have to rebuild tex assuming you're using a pretty new TeX.

I find that the Jadetex output and table handling has improved
*tremendously* in version 1.05.  It competes quite well with RTF now.

Consider using an operating system distribution with integrated
SGML/TeX/DSSSL support (i.e., Debian, plug plug).  This makes it
*very* easy to stay up-to-date and not have to worry about your SGML
catalog and all that annoying stuff normally associated with local
config mgmt.

But I agree that it's probably not trivial to hack on the TeX output
for tweaking how it looks.
