   Yeah, I suppose you're bound to encounter difficulty any time you
have a program create input for a system, like TeX, which is designed
to be written by hand.  All of the "features" which are designed to
make hand coding easier tend to make automated generation a little
   In this case, it seems you'd just need to map -- to --{}-- (or
something like that... I'm no TeXnician) on the input, either via
macros or in the OpenJade backend, whichever would be easier.  Of
course, this could be more complex than I'm giving it credit for. :)
