This is one of the things which are fixed in 1.3.1

This is correct. Just sit back and wait (on my old PII 266 it took
approx 30 min to compile).

This is easier as you deal with precompiled binaries plus the DocBook
DTD and stylesheets as nice packages that (theoretically) install
without hassles. I'd try this approach first as it is faster.

If you do have an existing binary it would most likely be
overwritten. Another issue is the catalog setup which is done
automatically by the packages. If you use other DTDs you might lose
access to these if the automatically generated master catalog misses
them.
