(dsssl) Data on left margin area?

I want to print some info on the left margin area.  Is it possible
without using tables?

Example; input:

    <p>
      <v n="1">This is the first verse and it is very,
        very long.</v>
      <v n="2">The second verse...</v>
    </p>

Desired output:

 l. marg.| main text

Producing the bars within the paragaph is easy; but how can I attach
the running info on the left side?
