Are different contraction rules applied to different parts of the document? No, but any document may be contracted differently in different countries. Within a 'locale' contractions are constant. Is the contraction process just a matter of mapping each word to an contracted form, or is it more complicated than that? Far more complicated. Both rule based, context based and exception (table) driven. Context information may be needed, as well as the content of an element.
