arghhh
search the archives of this list for `hack' `don't do this' or
`disable-output-encoding' and you'll find many messages explaining
why this is rarely a good idea and why, in general it doesn't work:-)

In XSL you are not printing markup tagging, you are creating nodes in a
node tree. You can not have half a node, so you can't have <TR>
without a </TR>
