Pity is, that those of us who can't stop our e-mail clients from rendering the HTML get David's examples rendered on screen, and backwards to boot (since the web browser doesn't recognize the namespace)....

the hr element is an XHTML hr so should produce a rule.

The hr is just some element that happens to be called hr in no namespace
and has no specified semantics.
