It doesn't deal with it well because it shouldn't have to.

A parable:

    "That's a fine looking horse you got there, but can it
     still pull a wagon if its legs have been whacked with a 
     hatchet?"

    "It shouldn't have to, that's not an event that's likely
     to occur during the working life of a horse."
