The only thing syou can do with result tree fragments are copy them to the output tree, or use them wher estrings would be allowed. So $sortedlist/* is an error as you can only use / with node sets. Most XSLT 1 engines (except mozilla's transformiix engine) have a x:node-set() extension to turn a result tree fragment into a node set so you could do x:node-set($sortedlist)/*[.... David
