So, $file-nbn-set/nbn-set/nbn gives a list (for you) of 3 nodes. For the first one, position() will be 1. For the second one, position() will be 2. For the third one, position() will be 3. The predicate will be non-zero in each case, and hence taken to be true, so all three results are taken. I don't know what you were expecting so I'm not sure why this is weird.
