If you want to write an Atari 2600 game with interrupts then why not write
it for the Atari 7800? The 7800 should maintain the full functionality of
its 6502C when in Atari 2600 mode including interrupts and the HALT line
introduced by the C modification for Atari's XL series.

I have an Atari 7800 myself, and I'm sure many others do as well. You
don't have to worry about encryption if you are just going to write 2600
games for it. It's worth some experimentation. Maybe you can also manage
to access the 4K? internal RAM in the 7800 while in 2600 mode. Maybe
(gasp) you can get the CPU to operate at 1.79mhz instead of the 1.33 it
kicks down to for 2600 mode.

There might be a hybrid 2600+ archetecture if you combine this with the
Supercharger.
