There's no need to reverse-engineer it. The book Video Demystified has a
pretty complete explanation of it.  It is sixteen bits on one line,
corresponding to one character, each frame.  The book is at school where
I'm not for the weekend... when I get back I'll look up what it's got.

It's not 16 bits across the entire scan line.. IIRC, it's somewhere in the
middle.  Again, I'll look it up when I can.
