Another approach is to FORCE vertical separation. Alien does this with the dots. It staggers them. It's like the venetian blind technique.

You'd bump up or down missiles in order to avoid them being on the same scanline.

This would be less perceptible with single-scanline missiles, of course.

For instance, if two players are on the same scanline and they shoot directly at eachother:

XXX     X       X       X                               XXX
                                X       X       X

See how the other player's bullets get forced down a scanline (actually two scanlines in a 2 scanline kernel)
