In Starmaster you normally only have to use the switch when the
gameplay isn't stressing.

In your game, the reverse gear is a central part of the
gameplay, so it should be easily accessable. The difficulty
switches aren't good for this (and maybe would get broken
soon).

Just a thought. How about using the "Select" switch as reverse, with it active as long as the switch is held down. This is more accessible than the difficulty switch on newer units, plus it returns to off easily. If you playing barefoot, you can even press it with your big toe. :)
