The trick is, can you make the stars accelerate/decelerate? Star Fire featured multiple speeds including reverse I believe. Star Raiders also featured 9 speeds plus stationary and the various speeds leading to hyperspace (400/800 version only).

No 2600 Star Raiders type game has yet supported multiple speeds. Starmaster can freeze the stars when docking, but that's about it.
