Greetings to everyone! I have another update to Euchre here and also at my web page (http://www.wwnet.net/~eeid/station26/euchre.html). This time around, I first worked on stabilizing the screen. It would "shudder" a little when the computer was scanning its hand during the second round of bidding, in which each player can name a trump suit. By splitting the scanning into several frames (one per suit), the code was able to run in the overscan period. I also changed the shuffle routine so it actually waits for the end of the display period; before it was dropping several lines per frame. After this, I set out to implement features to make the game a little more user-friendly. "zu03776" suggested having the cursor appear on the first available card when it is your turn to play. Not only did I do this, but I also made the cursor skip over already played cards. Now, if you have only two cards left, the cursor jumps directly between the two of them. (This should be similar to the Compute! version for the Atari 8-bit computers mentioned by Ronald Laski; I've seen such a game but never knew it was from Compute! magazine.) I also made an attempt at creating a PAL version. You can compile the source into a PAL version by adding -DPAL to the command line. The screen seems to be stable at 312 lines per frame. However, I had some difficulty finding colors that come close to the NTSC version. All the colors seem "washed out", pale compared to NTSC, at least in the Stella emulator for Linux. Enjoy the updates! I ask those of you out there with PAL televisions to try the PAL version out, let me know if the screen is indeed stable, and make suggestions for fixing up the colors. (For those who don't know, to be "at the barn door" means to have nine points, needing only one more point to win the game. :) I think I'm pretty close to wrapping this up.) Thanks to Thomas Jentzch for his optimization suggestions! I implemented his jump table for the stages and changed some ldx #0 ... ldx #1 to ldx #0 ... inx and gained 31 bytes.
