As has been mentioned a bunch on this list, Patola has quoted $0.85 each for up to 5000 pieces. After dealing with shipping, taxes, marking up for importing, etc. the per unit price to the public might be up around $2 or $3. Not too bad, in my opinion. The only immediate downside is the need to create the custom PCB, but as you can see from http://www.atariage.com/store/index.php?manufacturers_id=11 that wouldn't be a problem. All I would need to do it send Patola my payment information and they can turn around in 2-3 weeks maximum.

The $5 per unit from VGWiz is the same price you can get brand new games from O'Sheas for (and they still have millions available), so there is no cost savings there, just a few minutes of time saved by not having to remove the label.

Funny timing, as the guys from Patola FINALLY wrote me back (if you remember, we had a discussion about importing the cart shells from Brazil a few months ago, and they finally wrote back with samples of 1000, 2000, and 5000 pieces). The price is very low

How low is very low?

Considering that most homebrew games don't go over 200 units, the pricing on the new shells is a bit high. Don't get me wrong, this is a great development and I'm all for spending more on manufacturing in order to avoid cannibalizing old carts (which I don't like more from an archeological preservation angle vs. a time-sink one).

It would be nice to know whether we should pursue Patola after all or whether it's not worth the hassle.
