I'm not exactly sure. I haven't dug into it very far, but I think they use either an extra clock line, or an extra line for PAL phasing or something. If they needed the extra line, it would have been really nice, REALLY NICE, if they'd co-opted one of the unused chip selects. There are three of them. We needed our stereo. We wanted our stereo.
