OK, thanks for the clarification. That makes sense.
Turns out I was using the wrong power supply for the Sears Video Arcade II.
It's a 9-10VAC, 500-750mA and I was using a DC supply.
Silly me :)
Now to change those ugly red LEDs into something a little more sexy...
