This puts you in good company.  :)

If memory serves, there is a similar bug in the arcade version of Dig Dug.  If 
you drop a rock and blow up the last enemy at the same time, the enemy count 
underflows, and you're just left to unearth the remaining dirt and drop a 
rock on yourself.
