FWIW, I have been looking at Activision's Decathlon.  Anyway, this game does 
one of two things:

1. Set COLUBK to 0 for the scanline, OR
2. Put a STA HMOVE after every STA WSYNC, OR
3. If not using STA WSYNC, make sure a STA HMOVE occurs early in the 

There may be better ways, as this method doesn't really avoid them at all, 
it just makes the left 8 pixels or so always black.
