Virtools Promises and Competion> that's too bad....macromedia will quickly
fill the hole.
Thats where I have some doubts. I don't see in the whole Macromedia
productline a single good running 3D product. I don't see more than an
add-on to their big 2D Director package. Maybe I have not listened enough to
the market last year, but I remember that Microsoft has bought some good
game dev. cooperations in the last years before Xbox and their game line. I
can't remember that Macromedia has bought essential parts of the 3D
industry. So, if they are not deep into 3D dev. on their own, they have only
offered in a _nice_ move to ship Discreet and Havok imported technology in
their own boat. _That_ could be a lesson which Virtools can learn. But it
would be a great afford for Macromedia to learn 3D space and handling, while
they are good in selling 2D products against Adobe. As long as Adobe (with
Atmosphere) and Macromedia seem to produce Me-too-3D-Products, Virtools
should live prosper and should grow _faster_ than before.
My main concern belongs to Discreet and a bigger version of their gmax
product. Think about a behavior loaded Max scripting language for game devs.
They don't have so much to copy, if they observe the game market. They have
the connections to the industry and know the wishes of the game devs. and
can use their product standing in the 3D arena. They have blown Hyperwire (a
2D and 3D authoring tool, many awards but sold too cheap, nobody remembers
nowadays) and VRML is also not pure fun for Discreet. So I hope they will
stay quiet for a while. But Virtools with his open Maya, ......, eeeh
Softimage ?? or Lightwave ?? port must be against their business direction.
So I hope, besides some splendid cooperations which can make a demo out of
everything, there will be a sore user community around Atmosphere and the
Director 3D ExTrara.
Sorry this was a rush, couldn't stop the ink.
