Perhaps simply make the missile wider and flashier when it's an explosion.
As a missile becomes an explosion, it doubles in width, and sort of
sparkles around the general area of where the invader used to be for a
few frames.

I'd use that as a last result, if it turns out Jim couldn't optimize it
down to where it uses less RAM.

If we do end up making this a Supercharger game, we might as well include
some other features to make it more arcade-like, such as a high score and
an attract-mode screen with text.  Maybe even the cute little animation with
the upside-down Y.

Am I mistaken in remembering that arcade Space Invaders only had four-digit
scores?  In that case, six digits would be too many, although the arcade
machine had a high score in the middle.
