Very true. Do you think we'll ever get a full implementation? (By
which I mean a backend that supports the full range of DSSSL flow
objects.) With the stampede to XML I rather doubt it; Jadetex with
table support and math support will obviously be a boon, but I wonder if
anybody will ever write the code for page models, column sets, etc.
Free code, I mean. Actually its been a while since I've looked at
jadetex so I'm not sure how much of DSSSL it covers, so I'm assuming it
sticks pretty much to the simple-page-sequence stuff. I don't know
enough about TeX to imagine how one would implement what's needed to
support, for example, multiple column sets with sidenotes,
crossreferences, etc., but I suspect it would be pretty tough to do
without doing a bunch of the composition internally. Do you think it
feasible to use the Jadetex strategy to support such things? (I
understand "jadetex strategy" to mean a more or less direct mapping of
DSSSL specs to tex macro names, so the typesetting logic goes into the
macros rather than into the DSSSL backend. Close?)
