Thanks for your reply.

I dont have any particular attachment to DSSSL, I just want to render
formulas so I can sell DocBook et al. to the boss instead of going with
an expensive complicated proprietary MS solution.

For the sake of future googlers, do you have a link to a XSL based
solution?
