Well, uuid didn't come up in XQuery that i recall. At one point i did raise wanting a random number function, in order to have the WG discuss impure functions; the chair ruled that writing a random number function was easy for any user to write, and i wasn't in a place at the time to be confrontational about it. It turned out later that not having worked out some of the details around impure functions bit us badly later with modules and XQuery update.
