Yes, you could make an alternate controller like this. But it would have some
problems. For example, how could you tell when a player wished to go right
and exicute the special function if left/right button was pressed and
the joystick was moved left? You'd have to be careful how you employ the
special buttons in the game.

Nobody made those type of joysticks I guess.

Incidently. If you want a quick retreat in Chopper Command, press left and
right at the same time.
