Might be worth looking at the jEdit-syntax package (http://jedit-syntax.sourceforge.net/). MIT-style license. I looked at Netbean's Editor component when I was thinking about adding syntax highlighting to a project I was working on a few years ago, and this looked more promising.
Good luck if you decide to add syntax highlighting. I'd be interested to hear how it goes.
