As a compromize, you could show only one dot in the middle between the
player and the ball that symbolizes and shows the connection.

If you haven't got enough time per scanline to do these things, you could
try to narrow the playfield a little bit. As far as I remember, even the
C-64 version only displays the playfield over 80% of the possible width (32
chars instead of 40).
