Hi,

 you can try...

(declare-characteristic page-n-columns
   "UNREGISTERED::James Clark//Characteristic::page-n-columns" 2)

and for all the single column elements include "span: 2"...

(element singlecolumn
  (make paragraph
           span: 2))

It works fine in the RTF backend, but didn't work in the JadeTex backend.
I don't know if it work in the latest JadeTex backend?
I will be interested in knowing...
