The XSL working group are looking at layout driven formatting, which as far as I understand it, requires this two way communications. for example, I would like to have available something which is triggered by the formatter reaching the start (or end) of a new page. if (top of page) action I think perhaps this is the class of information which relates to two way communications, between the formatting engine and the stylesheet.
