I use emacs with an xml mode enabled, but this only assists me with syntax errors (unterminated elements, etc) and not semantic errors (document doesn't conform to its declared schema). Right ! But the point here was EMacs is able to work on very large files, and is a little bit easier than vi (according to some EMacs fans...) that as also some XML extensions... Not forgetting that Emacs has modes (packages) which make it a fully-fledged XML editor. All open source.
