David Winter says that the game is cycling the background colour during the title screen. In his first screenshot the background colour is grey, and there aren't any HMOVE-blanks visible. If Rubuk's Cube is shifing any objects during the cube display, it would have to do it with late HMOVEs which are somewhat unflrexible. Back in the day I had a BASIC program for the C64 that would show you how to solve the Cube after you told it which colours are on every square. There probably is some simple source code somewhere on the internet, that you could use for inspiration.
