Hi,

I'd like to +100 what Denise says. Every new feature adds costs for all
downstream developers. When only a small constituency actually benefits, this
can become a problem.

Maybe (along with the paving the cowpaths idea), nothing should be admitted
into Blue from Green unless a clear majority of Blue users clearly want it? If
not - that's what Green is for. If it's too large and permissive, feel free to
subset it. (I'm sure you have to say this a lot.)

Along with this idea, how about revisiting Orange? Debbie had a good
explanation as to why today's Orange doesn't work or at any rate has few users
(sorry I wish I could paraphrase). But the idea of Orange is a sound one. Or
something between Orange and Blue. (Ochre?)

Another reason? Convincing technologists that JATS or a JATS-based standard
will actually simplify things is difficult when a document model has hundreds
of elements, a majority of which they can't see ever using, but must account
for somehow.

Cheers, Wendell

Denise,

I want to thank you for your Gripey Suggestion. The JATS Standing Committee
gets so many requests to 'loosen up just one thing in Blue' and we very rarely
hear your side from users.

It is good to hear from the Anti-Greenificationists.

Jeff

Stop watering down Blue! We *need* an article tag set with some bones. It is
*helpful* to be able to require normal ordinary things like sections have
titles. As Blue becomes more Green it becomes squishier and squishier -- and
less valuable.

Or, perhaps, declare that war lost, make Blue just like Green, and invent a
new JATS color with built-in sensible rules for those of us who want help
keeping our articles rational and don't want to dedicate a programmer to
writing schematron to enforce rules that should be in the DTD!
