Ahhh I know all the secrets  :)
We had very large (>75% of screen) sprite matrices, absolutely flicker-free
on the C64.  The technique was rather interesting - I've remembered it all
these years.  The trick is not so much getting large blocks of sprites on
screen, but in having NO flicker at the transition points.  Yes, it is
possible - I know how.
