this seems inconceivable. I really cannot see how it can relate to a
TeX implementation at all. I am seriously baffled.

ideally, I would install MikTeX myself and try to reproduce it.  not
having (or wanting) a Windows box makes this rather difficult!

can anyone else reproduce it with MikTeX?
